Ooh – a very tasty treat. They’re made with oats, flour, butter, brown sugar, golden syrup (a cane version of honey), a little hot water, baking soda and optional coconut flakes.
The story is that they’re named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – forces joined together during WWI. Because the ingredients don’t spoil quickly, they were sent to troops during the war.
Now, ANZAC day is an entirely different matter – it commemorates the huge losses of the corps at Gallipoli, and is observed on April 25. There’s lots of info about that on the interwebs, of course, but this should give you the quick overview!
